How do you tell a body that wants it all that it can’t have it all?
The demands that society places on the body lead these performers to open their wounds, exposing and pushing themselves to the limit, with exhaustion becoming the breaking point. They all share a common testimony: their bodies said “enough,” bringing their lives to a sudden halt and forcing them to reconsider the way they used to want it all before that vital collapse.
LO QUIERO TO is a project that brings together performers residing in the host city for a residency. Participants may or may not have previous stage training, with the shared theme serving as the group’s unifying thread. At the end of the residency, a work-in-progress showing is held, followed by a discussion with the audience.
The starting point of this process was the moment Carlota’s body said “enough.” In 2019, following two minor surgeries in 2017 and 2018, she underwent major surgery for a malignant tumor in her left leg, which left her in a wheelchair for two months. Just as she fully recovered, the global pandemic hit. It was then that she began to rethink her relationship with her body and the demands she had placed on it since childhood.
LO QUIERO TO is a scenic experiment that explores physical limits. Testimony and documentation become dramatic text, and the narrative is constructed through a variety of stage resources.
Pain and scars, as universal language, enable a deep connection between people from different backgrounds. The scenic device that arises from the creative residencies always draws on two sources: biography (the body as territory) and performance (artistic or everyday action). This universality and convergence of languages allows for a unique and ephemeral structure in every performance, shared live with the audience.
